Hemodialysis: What to Expect
Schedule:
Typically 3 sessions per week, each lasting 3-4 hours. Your nephrologist will determine your exact schedule.
During Dialysis:
1. You’ll be seated comfortably in our dialysis chair/bed
2. The dialysis technician connects your fistula/catheter to the machine
3. Blood flows through the dialyzer (artificial kidney) — waste and excess water are removed
4. You’re monitored throughout by our team
5. You can rest, watch TV, read, or use your phone
Dialysis Access Types:
AV Fistula: A surgically created connection between an artery and vein in your arm — the preferred access for long-term dialysis
AV Graft: A synthetic tube connecting artery and vein — used when fistula isn’t possible
Central Venous Catheter (CVC): A temporary access placed in a large vein — used for immediate/emergency dialysis
